It’s now time to start the planning of the trip to Death Valley. Today D and I reserved a hotel in the valley since we were a bit worried that it would sell out. We’ll start looking for other places to stay as we finalize our route.

Right now were heading down Hwy 1 from the Bay Area, then heading inland on 46, and 58 to Bakersfield and through on 178 to 395. We’ll go north on 395 for a bit, then head into the park on 190. We should have a full day and a bit to explore the park. I’m not sure how much you can see from 2 wheels, but it’s more about the journey than the destination.

I’m not sure how we’ll head home. If this lack of rain keeps up (which I hope it does not) we’ll be able to go up 395 all the way to tahoe and come back on either 80 or 50. That might be risky with snow since it will still be early spring. More likely we’ll come back to the west side of the Sierras and head north, skirting the foothills and staying away from 5 and 99 as much as possible. It’s really sad there are not better options for roads going up and down CA that are scenic.

More as it gets planned. Working on my packing list next

About MotoCynic

I started riding motorcycles in 2006, and there is no going back. I've ridden more than 100,000 miles, most of it on a Ducati Monster, and despite setbacks and murderous BMW's I'm loving every mile.
